Bottom line
If you want a medicated scrub, this cleanser combines acne treatment with physical exfoliation. Fragrance and the added polishing step matter if your skin is easily irritated. At the Premium tier, you pay for that combination rather than proven superiority.
If you want a medicated acne cleanser with 2.5% benzoyl peroxide plus built-in physical exfoliation, Proactiv Solution Renewing Cleanser gives you a clearly active Premium option. The main tradeoff is routine overlap: cleansing, acne treatment, and scrubbing are all happening in one step.
That can make sense if your skin is oily, combination, or acne-prone and you tolerate a more active wash. If you already use retinoids, acids, other acne medications, or your skin is peeling or irritated, a simpler cleanser or simpler benzoyl-peroxide wash is easier to fit.

What it claims
Proactiv says Renewing Cleanser washes away excess oil, dirt, and pore-clogging impurities, removes dead skin cells with exfoliating beads, and helps clear existing acne while preventing new blemishes. The current product page positions it for oily and combination skin and directs twice-daily use.[1]
The current U.S. Drug Facts label identifies benzoyl peroxide 2.5% as the acne-treatment active. If you use other acne medications, it warns that irritation and dryness become more likely and that the ingredient can bleach hair and dyed fabrics.[2]
Claims vs. formula
Benzoyl peroxide 2.5% gives this cleanser a legitimate OTC acne-treatment role. That is direct active-drug evidence rather than a formula inference.
A small, open-label four-week study of a different 2.6% benzoyl-peroxide cleanser reported improvements in acne measures after one week, but its results are not a Proactiv product trial and do not prove this scrub works better than simpler washes.[3]
Disodium PEG-12 dimethicone sulfosuccinate and emulsifying ingredients help cleanse, while sorbitol, sodium PCA, propylene glycol, and sodium hyaluronate support the base. These ingredients do not guarantee that you will avoid the dryness warned about on the drug label.
Proactiv also deliberately adds physical exfoliating beads. If you already use a retinoid, leave-on acid, or another acne treatment, the question is whether the added scrubbing improves your routine or simply adds irritation.
The formula also contains fragrance. That does not change the benzoyl-peroxide treatment function, but it adds another fit consideration if your skin is already dry, irritated, or treatment-stressed.
Ingredients that matter
If you are choosing this wash for acne, the defining ingredient is benzoyl peroxide at 2.5%, not a moisturizer or botanical extract. Its cleansing base helps you wash away residue, and sorbitol and sodium hyaluronate provide supporting moisture-related ingredients.
You are also adding a physical-polishing step from the scrub beads. That combination is relevant if you enjoy exfoliating textures, but it is unnecessary for the acne active to have a treatment role and adds another tolerance consideration.
Benzoyl Peroxide
If inflamed pimples are your concern, benzoyl peroxide has strong acne evidence. Choose the wash or leave-on treatment your skin tolerates; a higher percentage is not automatically better.

Sorbitol is a well-established humectant and skin-conditioning ingredient that adds moisture support in cleansers and leave-on skincare. It is useful, common, and highly replaceable.

Read the IngredientBriefHyaluronic Acid
If your skin feels dry or tight, hyaluronic acid helps your skin hold moisture. You don't need several HA forms or a separate serum when your moisturizer already hydrates well.
Read the IngredientBriefSafety and regulatory context
For first-time users, the Drug Facts label directs a sensitivity check on a small affected area during the first three days and recommends starting once daily before increasing use as tolerated. That more cautious starting schedule matters even though the brand’s routine instructions say morning and night.[2]
The label advises against use on very sensitive skin or with a known benzoyl-peroxide sensitivity. Avoid your eyes, lips and mouth, and protect hair and colored fabrics from bleaching. If irritation becomes severe, the label directs you to stop and ask a doctor; it also calls for sunscreen when going outside. Using other topical acne medications at the same time raises irritation risk. Fragrance and scrubbing add further fit considerations.[2]
What to expect in the short term
Proactiv directs you to apply a small amount to damp skin, massage gently while avoiding the eyes, and rinse thoroughly. For your first uses, follow the Drug Facts sensitivity-test and once-daily starting instructions rather than assuming you need twice-daily treatment immediately.[2]
What to expect over time
Used consistently as directed, the cleanser gives you a genuine benzoyl-peroxide acne-treatment step. The physical exfoliation is not necessary for benzoyl peroxide to work, so long-term fit depends on whether combining treatment and scrubbing actually helps your skin.
Who it fits
This makes the most sense if your skin is oily, combination, or acne-prone, you specifically want benzoyl peroxide in the cleansing step, and you tolerate physical exfoliation and fragrance.
If your skin is very sensitive, the Drug Facts label says not to use this product. If your skin is peeling, irritated, or already stressed by retinoids, acids, or other acne treatments, a simpler cleanser or separate acne-treatment approach may fit better.
Compare before you buy
Choose Proactiv when you specifically want 2.5% benzoyl peroxide plus scrub-style exfoliation in the same cleansing step.
Choose a simpler benzoyl-peroxide cleanser when you want the acne active without paying Premium pricing for the Proactiv system format and added physical exfoliation.
Final Assessment
If you want acne treatment and physical polishing in a single wash, Proactiv provides 2.5% benzoyl peroxide plus exfoliating beads. The combination can increase irritation, and the medication requires care around dyed fabrics. At the Premium tier, its value depends on wanting both acne medicine and scrubbing rather than simpler treatment.
