The BB Registry

The BB Registry is The Beauty Briefing’s permanent editorial record of evaluated beauty products and their evaluation history.

It helps shoppers confirm which product was evaluated, which formula or market version was considered, what material conclusions were reached, and whether important product information or BB’s evaluation has changed over time.

The Registry may preserve information such as product identity, formula history, supporting evidence, BeautyBrief™ conclusions, material updates, corrections, reformulations, and changes to the Final Assessment.

The Registry contains products evaluated or formally entered into The Beauty Briefing’s editorial system. It is not intended to be a complete database of every beauty product on the market.

What is a BB Identifier?

A BB Identifier is the unique reference assigned to a product in the Registry.

It stays connected to the same product record through reformulations, packaging changes, and material evaluation updates. A genuinely different product may receive its own BB Identifier and separate Registry record.

The BB Identifier helps distinguish the exact product evaluated from products with similar names, different versions, or updated formulas.

What a Registry record may include

Depending on the product and the information available, a Registry record may include:

  • Product and brand name
  • BB Identifier
  • Product category
  • Formula or market version evaluated
  • Product status
  • Relevant supporting evidence
  • Material formula, packaging, claim, or product updates
  • BeautyBrief™ conclusions
  • Links to the current BeautyBrief
  • Documented evaluation history

The purpose is not to display every administrative detail. It is to preserve the information shoppers need to understand what was evaluated, what BB concluded, and whether something important has changed.

How product changes are handled

Beauty products may be reformulated, repackaged, renamed, discontinued, repositioned, or replaced over time.

When a change is material, the Registry record may be updated and the product may be reviewed again. A material change could include:

  • A meaningful formula change
  • A change in intended use, directions, warnings, or product format
  • New evidence that affects the original evaluation
  • A relevant regulatory change
  • A significant change in product status, Price Tier, or market position
  • Corrected information that affects a material conclusion
  • Another development that could change how the product should be understood

Minor packaging, design, pricing, or administrative changes do not automatically require a new evaluation.

Reformulations and new products

A reformulation generally remains connected to the product’s permanent Registry record so shoppers can see that the formula changed and whether the evaluation was reviewed.

A product that is materially different in purpose, formula, format, or identity may require a separate record and BB Identifier.

This distinction helps prevent a new or substantially changed product from being treated as though it were identical to the version originally evaluated.

How evaluation history is preserved

A BeautyBrief reflects The Beauty Briefing’s evaluation of a specific product and market version at a specific point in time.

If new information materially changes that evaluation, the Registry preserves the relevant earlier conclusions rather than silently replacing them.

A reformulation, stronger evidence, corrected product information, new regulatory context, a material change in value, or another significant development may change Claims Check, Shopper Fit, Formula Flags, Shopper Preferences, Value Check, Bottom Line, comparisons, or the narrative Final Assessment.

The current evaluation remains clear while the Registry provides accountability for what changed, when it changed, and why BB’s interpretation was revised.

How the Registry connects to BeautyBriefs

Registry records and BeautyBriefs serve different purposes.

The BeautyBrief provides the current product evaluation. Its BeautyBrief™ presents the most important product information and editorial conclusions in the page hero, while the full BeautyBrief explains the evidence, shopper fit, value, limitations, comparisons, and reasoning behind them.

The Registry provides the permanent product record, including the identified product version, formula history, material updates, corrections, and documented evaluation history.

Registry records link to the current BeautyBrief, and BeautyBrief pages may link back to the relevant Registry record.

Why the BB Registry matters

Beauty products and the information surrounding them change. Formulas are updated, claims evolve, evidence develops, regulatory context changes, and earlier conclusions sometimes need to be reconsidered.

The BB Registry gives shoppers a traceable record of what The Beauty Briefing evaluated, what it concluded, and what changed over time.

It supports a broader commitment to clear, consistent, transparent, and accountable beauty-buying guidance.
