Bottom line

If you want inexpensive daily foam, this cleanser combines mild surfactants with diglycerin and hyaluronic acid ingredients. Its stored formula contains fragrance and may not suit scent-reactive skin, while rinse-off humectants do not replace moisturizer. At the Budget tier, choose it for routine cleansing and comfort.

What is Shopper Fit?

Shopper Fit shows who The Beauty Briefing finds the product is reasonably suited for after reviewing the complete formula or product design, product format, expected performance, directions, tolerability, usability, and available evidence.

Depending on the product category, Shopper Fit may reflect factors such as skin type, hair or scalp characteristics, product needs, routine compatibility, sensitivity, experience level, or practical use considerations.

Shopper Fit is BB's editorial product-fit assessment, not a copy of the brand's marketing. It is not a diagnosis, a guarantee of results or tolerance, or a claim that the product is suitable for everyone.

What are Shopper Preferences?

Shopper Preferences are product attributes The Beauty Briefing has enough evidence to treat as established for the exact product. A brand statement, badge, or retailer claim alone is not enough.

Vegan
BB found sufficient documentation to verify the vegan claim within the documented product scope.
Cruelty-Free
BB found sufficient documentation to verify the cruelty-free claim within the scope of the evidence reviewed.
Non-Comedogenic
BB found sufficient product-specific evidence or documentation to support the non-comedogenic claim. A brand claim by itself does not qualify.
Dermatologist-Tested
BB verified documentation showing the exact product was tested with dermatologist involvement. This does not mean dermatologist-recommended.
Ophthalmologist-Tested
BB verified documentation showing the exact product was tested with ophthalmologist involvement.
Hypoallergenic
BB found sufficient product-specific evidence or documentation to support the hypoallergenic claim. It does not guarantee that no shopper will react.
None Found
BB did not find sufficient evidence to verify any of the controlled Shopper Preferences for the exact product.

Brand marketing tells BB what to investigate. BeautyBrief tells the shopper what BB has established.

What are Formula Flags?

Formula Flags identify characteristics of a product's formula that materially affect shopper fit, tolerability, routine compatibility, or use. A flag does not mean an ingredient is bad or that the product is unsafe. It highlights something worth knowing before you buy.

Essential oils
Essential oils that are relevant to fragrance exposure, sensitivity, or use.
Drying alcohols
Volatile alcohols at a level that materially affects feel, dryness, or tolerability.

Retinoid actives that affect routine compatibility, tolerability, or use.
Exfoliating acids
Exfoliating acids such as AHAs, BHAs, or PHAs at a functionally relevant level.
Comedogenic concerns
Formula characteristics that warrant additional consideration for breakout-prone shoppers.

Added color
Added colorants that materially affect the finished formula or shopper use.
Other
Another formula characteristic materially affects shopper fit or use.
None identified
No defined Formula Flags materially affect shopper fit or use.

Formula Flags are informational. They are not a list of ingredients everyone should avoid.

If you want a lightly foaming Budget cleanser with more water-binding support than a bare gel wash, e.l.f. Holy Hydration! e.l.f.ssential Daily Cleanser gives you a glycerin- and hyaluronate-supported option for dry, normal, combination, or oily skin. The main fit limitation in BB’s stored verified formula is fragrance, which makes the sensitive-skin positioning less straightforward.

What it claims

e.l.f. describes e.l.f.ssential Daily Cleanser as a gentle, refreshing gel face wash that removes dirt, oil, and impurities while leaving your skin hydrated, soft, and comfortable. The current U.S. page highlights a 1% hyaluronic acid complex and lists dry, oily, combination, and sensitive skin among the intended skin types.[1]

The current e.l.f. page also identifies the product as vegan and cruelty-free, and PETA currently lists e.l.f. Cosmetics as cruelty-free with all products vegan.[2]

Claims vs. formula

Sodium cocoyl methyl isethionate, sodium methyl cocoyl taurate, cocamidopropyl betaine, and sodium methyl oleoyl taurate work together to remove everyday oil, sweat, sunscreen residue, and surface buildup without relying on one especially aggressive cleansing agent.

Diglycerin and trehalose sit relatively high in the stored formula, while glycerin, hydrolyzed sodium hyaluronate, and sodium hyaluronate add more water-binding support. Those ingredients help the cleanser feel more comfortable after rinsing, although they do not replace a leave-on moisturizer.

The 1% hyaluronic-acid-complex claim is only partly transparent because e.l.f. does not publicly break out the concentration of each hyaluronate form within that complex.

Per BB’s review-cycle instruction, the stored verified U.S. formula is being accepted for this review. That stored formula contains fragrance. FDA notes that some fragrance components can trigger allergic reactions or sensitivities in susceptible people.[3] That is why BB continues to exclude Sensitive from Shopper Fit for this cycle.

Ingredients that matter

Sodium cocoyl methyl isethionate, sodium methyl cocoyl taurate and cocamidopropyl betaine provide the light cleansing foam. Diglycerin, trehalose, glycerin and sodium hyaluronate contribute water-binding support, though they do not replace leave-on moisturizer.

The brand reports a 1% hyaluronic-acid complex without specifying the concentration of each individual hyaluronate ingredient. The previously verified INCI includes fragrance, and that matters more to reactive skin than a generic sensitive-skin recommendation.

Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate

Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate

Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate is a well-established cleansing and foaming surfactant used mainly in rinse-off formulas. The complete surfactant system determines cleansing strength and tolerability.

Safety and regulatory context

The official product page identifies this cleanser as Vegan and Cruelty-Free and markets it for dry, oily, combination and sensitive skin.[1] Those declarations do not guarantee an irritation-free experience.

The current brand page does not provide a full accessible ingredient declaration in text, so the previous formula-verification date is preserved rather than claiming a new formula verification. The stored formula contains added fragrance; check your physical package if you are sensitive to fragranced skincare.

What to expect in the short term

You get a lightly foaming gel that removes routine oil, sweat, sunscreen residue, and daily buildup without the very stripped finish of a stronger foaming cleanser.

The water-binding ingredients help your skin feel more comfortable after rinsing, but they do not turn the cleanser into a leave-on hydration step.

What to expect over time

The repeat-use value is straightforward daily cleansing with a more hydration-supportive base than a bare gel wash.

At the Budget tier, you get a 5.5 oz cleanser, a mild multi-surfactant system, several humectants, a 1% hyaluronic-acid-complex claim, and current Vegan and Cruelty-Free support.

Who it fits

This makes the most sense if your skin is dry, normal, combination, or oily and you want light foam with a comfortable after-feel.

If your skin is fragrance-reactive or you are choosing the product specifically because e.l.f. lists sensitive skin among the intended skin types, BB would wait for a fresh formula verification before relying on that positioning.

Compare before you buy

Final Assessment

If you want inexpensive light foam with water-binding ingredients, the Holy Hydration Daily Cleanser offers a practical routine wash. Its 1% hyaluronic-acid-complex positioning does not establish lasting barrier repair, and the previously verified formula contains fragrance. At the Budget tier, value comes from cleansing feel and tolerability, not treatment.
