Bottom line

If you prefer an aromatic cleansing oil, Dermalogica supplies effective first-cleansing ingredients. Its citrus and lavender oils may not fit a fragrance-reactive routine, and the cleanser does not repair skin barriers. At the Premium tier, choose it for removal and texture.

What is Shopper Fit?

Shopper Fit shows who The Beauty Briefing finds the product is reasonably suited for after reviewing the complete formula or product design, product format, expected performance, directions, tolerability, usability, and available evidence.

Depending on the product category, Shopper Fit may reflect factors such as skin type, hair or scalp characteristics, product needs, routine compatibility, sensitivity, experience level, or practical use considerations.

Shopper Fit is BB's editorial product-fit assessment, not a copy of the brand's marketing. It is not a diagnosis, a guarantee of results or tolerance, or a claim that the product is suitable for everyone.

What are Shopper Preferences?

Shopper Preferences are product attributes The Beauty Briefing has enough evidence to treat as established for the exact product. A brand statement, badge, or retailer claim alone is not enough.

Vegan
BB found sufficient documentation to verify the vegan claim within the documented product scope.
Cruelty-Free
BB found sufficient documentation to verify the cruelty-free claim within the scope of the evidence reviewed.
Non-Comedogenic
BB found sufficient product-specific evidence or documentation to support the non-comedogenic claim. A brand claim by itself does not qualify.
Dermatologist-Tested
BB verified documentation showing the exact product was tested with dermatologist involvement. This does not mean dermatologist-recommended.
Ophthalmologist-Tested
BB verified documentation showing the exact product was tested with ophthalmologist involvement.
Hypoallergenic
BB found sufficient product-specific evidence or documentation to support the hypoallergenic claim. It does not guarantee that no shopper will react.
None Found
BB did not find sufficient evidence to verify any of the controlled Shopper Preferences for the exact product.

Brand marketing tells BB what to investigate. BeautyBrief tells the shopper what BB has established.

What are Formula Flags?

Essential oils that are relevant to fragrance exposure, sensitivity, or use.
Drying alcohols
Volatile alcohols at a level that materially affects feel, dryness, or tolerability.

Formula Flags are informational. They are not a list of ingredients everyone should avoid.

If you regularly remove waterproof makeup or sunscreen and enjoy aromatic cleansing oils, Dermalogica Precleanse gives you an effective Premium first cleanse. The main fit issue is the same one the brand creates for itself: it explicitly includes sensitivity and redness in the positioning while the stored verified formula contains several aromatic essential oils and fragrance allergens.

Beauty Briefing Verdict 2026 09 20T221412.072

What it claims

Dermalogica says Precleanse melts away excess sebum, sunscreen, waterproof makeup, environmental residue, and product buildup as the first step of a double cleanse. The current U.S. page recommends it for all skin types and specifically includes acne and blemishes, pores, and sensitivity and redness.[1]

Claims vs. formula

Caprylic/capric triglyceride provides the main oil phase for dissolving sunscreen, makeup, sebum, and other oil-soluble residue. PEG-40 sorbitan peroleate helps that loosened residue mix with water so the product rinses away cleanly.

Apricot kernel oil, sunflower seed oil, borage seed oil, kukui seed oil, and rice bran oil add slip, while tocopherol adds supporting antioxidant value.

Orange, grapefruit, mandarin, lemongrass, lavandin, and lavender essential oils create the aromatic profile, alongside citral, limonene, and linalool. That does not make the cleanser unsuitable for everyone, but it narrows fit if fragrance or essential oils already trigger your skin.

Ingredients that matter

Caprylic/capric triglyceride and apricot kernel oil dissolve sunscreen and makeup while PEG-40 sorbitan peroleate helps disperse the oil with water. Sunflower, borage and rice bran oils provide emollient slip, not a leave-on barrier treatment.

Orange, grapefruit, mandarin, lavender and lemongrass oils provide much of the aroma. They do not establish the efficacy of a separate pore or redness treatment; the oil-emulsifier system explains the makeup-removal role.

Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride

Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride

Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride is a common emollient and occlusive that adds softness, slip, and moisture support to skincare formulas. Its value depends on the complete product, not the ingredient name alone.

Safety and regulatory context

Dermalogica directs this precleanse for dry-face application, emulsifying with wet hands and rinsing, followed by a second cleanser.[1] Although positioned for several skin types, its essential-oil blend matters if fragrance exposure triggers irritation.

Product-level verification has supported its vegan and cruelty-free designations.[2] That does not mean the formula is free of aromatic ingredients.

What to expect in the short term

Applied to dry skin, Precleanse loosens waterproof makeup, sunscreen, sebum, and other oily buildup. Adding water turns it into a light milky emulsion before you follow with a second cleanser.

What to expect over time

The repeat-use value is practical first cleansing, not treatment. At the Premium tier, the current range runs from retailer-listed pricing to retailer-listed pricing depending on size.

The oil base and emulsifier work well, but fragrance-free cleansing oils can perform the same core removal job if sensitivity or redness is part of your buying decision.

Who it fits

This makes the most sense if your skin is dry, normal, combination, oily, or acne-prone and you want an aromatic first cleanse for makeup or sunscreen.

If your skin is sensitive because fragrance or essential oils are a trigger, choose a fragrance-free emulsifying oil instead.

Compare before you buy

Choose Precleanse when you actively value its aromatic sensory experience and already know those oils do not bother your skin.

Choose a fragrance-free cleansing oil when sensitivity or redness is the priority.

Final Assessment

If you regularly remove makeup or sunscreen and enjoy scented oils, Dermalogica Precleanse supplies effective first-cleansing ingredients and an emulsifying rinse. Its numerous essential oils complicate fit for fragrance-reactive skin without adding proved corrective skincare benefits. At the Premium tier, value rests on the oil texture and sensory experience.
