Tome Foundational Treatment Opens for Preorder With Bioneedle Spicule Skincare

Dermata Therapeutics has opened U.S. preorders for Tome Foundational Treatment, a once-weekly resurfacing mask built around freshwater-sponge spicules the company calls Bioneedle™. The four-treatment kit is priced at $178, or about $45 per treatment, with shipping expected to begin August 25.[1]

The launch is notable because Tome is bringing a more intensive, procedure-inspired exfoliating treatment into an at-home format. For shoppers, the important questions are whether the results justify the price and how much irritation or downtime comes with them.

What launched

Each weekly treatment includes Bioneedle™ powder, an Activator tube, and an application brush. Dermata identifies Bioneedle™ as powdered Spongilla lacustris, a wild-harvested freshwater sponge. The powder and activator are mixed immediately before use.[1]

Dermata says the treatment is designed to improve the appearance of tone and texture over time. The preorder announcement, however, does not provide enough finished-product clinical detail to show how large or consistent those changes are.[1]

Why it matters

Spicule skincare is moving further into mainstream at-home use, and Tome sits at the more intensive end of that trend.

At nearly $45 per use, shoppers need more than a novel ingredient story. The finished product has to justify the cost through visible improvement, tolerability, and a level of routine disruption that feels reasonable.

What we know

The preorder announcement confirms a $178 price for four once-weekly treatments, with shipping planned for August 25. Subscribers are expected to receive a 10% discount.[1]

Dermata positions Tome as a skin-renewal treatment built around Bioneedle™ technology and as the first product in a broader planned skincare portfolio.[1]

What we’re watching

The main gap is finished-product evidence. BB will be watching for fuller details on the formula, study design, participant numbers, measured outcomes, irritation, downtime, and adverse events.

We are also watching whether at-home spicule treatments become a larger category. If they do, the useful comparison will be simple: how much visible improvement shoppers get for the price, irritation, and effort involved.
